Hobby Horse Club Meets Riding Club – Two Worlds, One Concept

The wonderful thing about Hobby Horsing is that everyone can find something in it for themselves—whether as a playful hobby, a demanding sport, or an introduction to the world of horses. Eva, who runs an equestrian and therapy center while also managing a Hobby Horse club, showcases a very special approach to Hobby Horsing. We have followed her journey from the beginning and are truly inspired by her concept. She has successfully integrated Hobby Horsing with a children's group, riding lessons on real horses, and hippotherapy. In our eyes, she implements the concept perfectly—which is why we asked her a few questions.

How long have you had Hobby Horses?
Our Hobby Horses have been part of our stable for at least four years—complete with their own "stall" and plenty of accessories. Since we work with children as young as four, who love to play, the Hobby Horses are in daily use. After riding, stable duties, and feeding time, there is always room for more play. Just like their living counterparts, our Hobby Horses have their own names and are beloved by individual children. Often, the most popular Hobby Horse closely resembles a real horse in the stable.

What events are the highlights?
Every year, we organize pony riding games, a dressage competition, and open house days. As a small riding stable, we appreciate every successful event. Our competitions provide children with the opportunity to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience—both with large horses and ponies. A diverse supporting program and catering ensure a great day. The fact that many participants return year after year is the best compliment for us.
Hobby Horse competitions have also become a permanent part of our tournaments. They take place at the end of the tournament day and bring a refreshing change. The children usually prepare a joint freestyle routine in advance, which requires a lot of teamwork. As a Hobby Horse club, we hope to continue organizing successful events in the years to come. Seeing happy and enthusiastic children is the greatest reward for us.

How many real horses vs. Hobby Horses do you have?
Right now, we have the perfect balance: 9 to 9! Our stable is home to seven large horses and two ponies, Físa and Lejla. In the clubhouse of our Hobby Horse club, there are nine Hobby Horses—including the first two white ones, which I once sewed from a bedsheet for my children. Over time, seven more sports Hobby Horses in various colors and sizes have been added.

From Hobby Horse to Real Horse
This transition often happens naturally here. It's not that a child picks up a Hobby Horse one day and suddenly finds themselves riding a real horse the next. However, Hobby Horses help children get comfortable in the world of horses more quickly.
Our main focus is on hippotherapy, where Hobby Horses serve as a valuable learning aid. They help us teach children what qualities a therapy horse must have—such as lunging around a wheelchair. Even the children in our riding groups frequently use Hobby Horses to practice movements that are still challenging for them on a real horse. This way, they don’t have to focus on already internalized movements while riding. Anyone who works with horses knows: it’s not easy to pay attention to your posture, aids, the horse, and the surroundings all at once. With Hobby Horses, training becomes both playful and effective.

Joint or Separate Groups?
Currently, Hobby Horsing is integrated into our riding groups—and this has proven to be successful. Riding requires a lot of concentration and adherence to rules, so the children enjoy playing with the Hobby Horses afterward.
Since interest in Hobby Horsing continues to grow and we see how much joy it brings the children, we are planning to establish a dedicated group for tournament-level Hobby Horsing.
In summer, we regularly host children’s camps—both day and overnight camps—where Hobby Horsing is an integral part. When the horses are resting in the stable or grazing in the pasture, the children naturally turn to the Hobby Horses. Our Hobby Horse club is delighted that this concept works so well and that more and more children are discovering their passion for Hobby Horsing.
